History of Eagle Pass The Maverick County area was probably traversed by more early Spanish explorers and settlers than was any other section of Texas. In 1665, Fernando Azcue led an expedition pursuing Indians into the unexplored area. In 1675, the Bosque-Larios Expedition crossed the Rio Grande at Monclova Viejo, just above Piedras Negras, opposite the present town of Quemado. In all probability, the first Massever celebrated on Texas soil was held on May 15, 1675, at a place called San Isidro near the present Quemado Valley in Maverick County. In 1688, Alonso de Leon crossed the Rio Grande just below present Eagle Pass near the site of San Juan Bautista Mission, which, although it is on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, is considered the first of the chain of missions that eventually included those in the San Antonio area. The growth of Maverick County has been dramatically influenced by various historical events, such as the northerly trek of the Spanish missionaries, the westerly trips of the California “gold miners”, military encampments needed because of Indian activities, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and World War I and II. Its origin as a mere frontier town has been replaced by a thriving international trade center. |
